HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - Superb second rounds from Ellie Haughton and Caroline Nemes helped lead Carson-Newman to its second straight Battle at Hilton Head Championship.

The Eagles shot ten-over on the day to card a second round score of 298. The Eagles finished the two day tournament with a total score of 26-over, winning their second straight championship in the Lowcountry by three strokes over Wingate with a final score of 602. Last year, Carson-Newman won the event by just one stroke over Lenoir-Rhyne with a 53-over 629.

As a team, Carson-Newman carded 20 total birdies, the most of any team in the field. The Eagles also had the best average score on par fives, averaging a score of 5.25 and 10-over on the longest holes at the tournament.

"

The girls never gave up on the course," says Associate Head Women's Golf Coach Kelsey Hutson. "They battled the entire time. Caroline and Ellie finished with a 71 and a 73 today, and Ellie and Maeve (Cummins) placed inside the top-five. We'll celebrate this win tonight but now we'll get ready and prepare for the Low Tide event in Charleston next week."

Haughton (Lincolnshire, England) finished the weekend in third place after shooting one-over during the second round. The junior finished the tournament with a score of four-over to lead the Eagles. Haughton finished tied for fourth for the best average score on Par fives, averaging an even-par score of 5.00. This is Haughton's first top-five finish since she finished tied for second at the 2021 Louise Suggs Invitational.

Maeve Cummins (Waringstown, Northern Ireland) recorded her third straight top-five finish, finishing tied for fourth overall after carding a five-over par 77 in the second round. Cummins finished the tournament at six-over for the week. Cummins had the second best score of the field on par fours, averaging one-over and a score of 4.05.

Nemes (Orlando, Fla.) did the most moving of any Eagle in the field after day one, soaring 30 spots to finish the week tied for tenth at nine-over. The freshman from Orlando carded a one-under par 71 on the final day of the tournament, one of just two athletes to shoot under-par in the second round. Nemes is the first Eagle to finish a round under-par since Maeve Cummins did so at the 2021 UIndy Invitational where she shot two-under.

Nemes and teammate Hannah Holland tied with eight other athletes for the most birdies in the tournament, finishing with six. Nemes also tied for the second best score on par fives, finishing one-under and averaging a score of 4.88 on the longest holes at the Robert Trent Jones Course.

Holland (Sale Creek, Tenn.) finished the tournament tied for seventeenth after shooting a five-over 77 in the final round. Holland finished the tournament at 12-over par. It is Holland's second straight top-20 finish of the season.

Aynsleigh Martin (Knoxville, Tenn.) wrapped up her first career tournament for Carson-Newman, shooting 14-over in the second round. Martin finishes the weekend tied for 47th at 19-over.

Hailey McLaughlin of Wingate won the individual event championship, shooting even-par for the entire tournament.

The Eagles return to the Palmetto State on Feb. 28 to compete at the Low Tide Intercollegiate in Charleston. The two day event will be held at the Dunes West Golf Club in the Holy City.
